UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) and IUPAC (International Union of Purified and Applied Chemistry) are joining efforts in the organisation of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011) celebrating the achievements of chemistry worldwide and its most important contributions to the quality of our lives.
Under the theme "Chemitry - Our life, our future", chemical societies, academies, institutions and the chemical industry will be hosting all year long discussions, events, competitions and other activities both on national and international level making sure to meet the IYC 2011 objectives:
- Increase the public appreciation and understanding of chemistry
- Encourage interest of young people in chemistry
- Generate enthusiasm for the creative future of chemistry
- Celebrate chemistry and in particular the role of women in chemistry
The 2 competitions put in place, ie. “Portrait of a woman chemist” and “Awareness Campaign on Women and Chemistry”, Xperimania addresses the growing need to put chemistry back on the map in ways that attract more people to the field, especially to bridge the gender gap in chemistry in Europe.
